Overview of Bladder Pain Syndrome Treatment

There is considerable variation in the treatment of Bladder Pain Syndrome, both within the UK and internationally.


Successful Bladder Pain Syndrome treatment will differ from patient to patient, with a range of therapies being provided by a multidisciplinary team usually being required.

Bladder Pain Syndrome Treatment Options

Treatment for Bladder Pain Syndrome includes:

Oral Analgesia

Antihistamines

Amitriptyline and other neuropathic pain treatments

Oral pentosan polysulfate sodium (elmiron®)

Bladder (intravesical) instillations including ingredients such as sodium hyaluronate, sodium chondroitin sulfate, lidocaine, heparin or sodium bicarbonate

Neuromodulation (nerve stimulation)

Surgical treatment including cautery of Hunner’s lesions

Radical surgery such as urinary diversion, orthoptic diversion and augmentation cystoplasty

Supportive treatment including psychotherapy and physical therapy
